What's Her Story: Samantha Mathis (b. May 12, 1970) is an American actress. Mathis was born in Brooklyn, New York to Vienna-born Bibi Besch, who was also an actress, and who died of cancer in 1996 at the age of 56. Mathis is the grand-daughter of actress Gusti Huber. She stayed with her mother after her parents divorced when she was three years old. This exposed her to the acting world from a young age and thus influenced her career choice. Her first starring role in a feature film was the part of Nora in Pump Up the Volume with Christian Slater, whom she was dating at the time. Mathis was with River Phoenix the night that he died. The two of them had dated since they played in The Thing Called Love. Like Phoenix had been, she is also a vegetarian.
